Rodan + Fields is an MLM or multi-level marketing business, selling life-changing skincare. They target moms who want to make money from home as their work force, with promises of being an independent consultant with a flexible schedule that will allow you to become an entrepreneur.
In this Rodan + Fields Review, I am going to give you some background information, products that are available, costs involved to join, what the compensation looks like and how much money you can expect to make selling Rodan + Fields.
Make sure to read before you actually join their program. It could save you some money.
Background On Rodan + Fields
Rodan + Fields was founded by dermatologists Dr. Katie Rodan and Dr. Kathy Fields in 2002, with the intention of giving consumers the best skin of their lives. They are also the creators of Proactiv, which many are familiar with from all the television ads.
They sold the company a year later to Estee Lauder and than reacquired it in 2007. At that point they relaunched the brand as a MLM, and is headquartered out of San Francisco, California.

Rodan + Fields offer skincare products that are supposed to give you better skin than ever before. They generally are aimed at older woman, with categories in redefine, reverse, unblemish and soothe. There is no shortage of product offerings with this line.
Here are some of the areas of skincare that they provide.
- Regimens
- Face Serums
- Eyes, Lips and Lashes
- Face Masks
- Dermacosmetics
- Hand and Body
- Sun Protection
- Pro Skincare Tools
- Accessories
- PFC Foundation
How Much Does It Cost To Be A Rodan + Fields Consultant
Just like other MLM companies, there is a cost associated with being a consultant for Rodan + Fields. They have 4 different kits that you can choose from, but it is doubtful that you could ever make any money with the least expensive kit. Here is how the different kits break down.
Business Portfolio
This kit will cost you $45 and is considered an entry level way to start your business. It includes necessary paperwork and guides, along with a Quick Start Business Guide and Product Guide. There are no products, literature or samples included with this kit.
Personal Results Kit
This kit will cost you $395. It includes everything that is in the Business Portfolio Kit (which isn’t much), along with Rodan + Fields Regimen, so you can try out and share your results with anyone you are trying to sell the products to. It also includes REDEFINE Regimen and a few ESSENTIALS.
Core Kit
The Core Kit cost $695. You will receive everything that is in the above kits along with the 5 core Rodan + Fields Regimens, the latest Rodan + Fields products, Radiant Defense Perfecting Liquid sample cards (10 of them), “before and afters” flip board and leave behind flyers.
Ultimate Kit
The Ultimate Kit comes with a price tag of $995 (I consider this a bit pricey) and is considered the kit for the serious entrepreneur. It includes everything from the previous kits, some of the best-sellers, chic Folio, an assortment of 50 samples and business cards.
You can set up a website through Rodan + Fields to promote your products with any of the kit packages and there is virtual learning available to help you.
Rodan + Fields Compensation Package
To have any chance for success with an MLM company, you are expected to not only sell the products, but sell others on joining the program with you. The more consultants you can get to join below you, the better your earnings will be.
Rodan + Fields has 5 ways to earn with their compensation package. Most of these pay structures are hard to understand and are confusing, but I will try to break it down for you to see how you can earn money being a consultant for Rodan + Fields.
Retail Profit
This is selling to a retail customer or a preferred customer. A retail customer is someone who purchases products through a consultant at suggested retail price. A preferred customer agrees to receive a regular shipment by enrolling in a preferred customer perks program.
You will earn the difference between what your consultant price is compared to the retail price or the preferred customer price.
Consultant Commission
This would be sales to the consultants and preferred customers you sponsor. You would need a minimum of 100 sales volume for your consultant account each commission period, which is a calendar month. You would earn 10% commission from customers and consultants on your first line and preferred customers.
Personal Team Commissions
This would be sales made by your personal team and consultants you sponsor. You would need to qualify as an Executive Consultant. This means you are required a monthly minimum of 100 in sales volume and a minimum of 600 in personally sponsored qualifying volume in a calendar month. This includes preferred customers who you enroll, consultants you sponsor and retail customers.
The commissions are 5% for sales generated by all consultants and customers in your personal team and consultant commissions of 10% on all level 1 sales, and retail profit from retail customers and preferred customers. See chart below.
Generation Commissions
This has sales made by the extended organization your personal team creates. This happens when one of your consultants reaches the Executive Consultant status. They will move out of your personal team to your Generation 1, making you a level 1 Executive consultant.
Generation commissions are 5% on Generation 1 volume, personal team commissions of 5% on your consultants and customers in your personal team and consultant commission of 10% on all level 1 volume. Also, retail profit from retail customers and preferred customers.
This can go up to 5 levels.
Performance Bonuses
These are added bonuses for performance achievements, but I wasn’t able to find information how they are earned or how much.
You must have $100 in sales per month in personal purchases or retail customers to earn any commission.
How Much Can You Make With Rodan + Fields
With all the information above on Rodan + Fields compensation plan, you might be getting excited that this might be where you can start earning some money. That would be a mistake believing you can earn much of anything working with Rodan + Fields.
I have found quite a bit of information on the earnings for Rodan + Fields Consultants for 2018. In fact, if you look real close at their website, much of this information is provided directly from them.
Here are of couple of disclosures that Rodan + Fields provide on their website if you dig deep enough.
“Do your own due diligence prior to making a decision to participate.”
“Many people earn fun money.”
I don’t know about you, but I am looking to make more than just fun money.
According to Rodan + Fields Income Disclosure Statement, not many people are actually making anything with this company. Here are some eye-opening stats on just how poorly your opportunities are with Rodan + Fields.
- In 2018, there were 411,651 enrolled consultants, 222,644 (54%) were paid at least 1 month of sales.
- 188,987 (46%) received discounted prices but never received any commission.
- The top 1% were paid a little over $29,000 annually.
- The top 10% were paid less than $5000 annually.
- The top 50% earned no more than $598 annually.
- Over 61% earned an average annual salary of $245.
- Only 2% make more than minimum wage.
There are no consultants that earn in the top tier.
According to Wikipedia, Rodan + Fields use a business model that has been criticized by consumer advocates as being close to a pyramid scheme.
My Recommendation Instead Of Rodan + Fields
I commend you for doing your research ahead of time, and I hope this article has found you before you have purchased any of the starter kits from Rodan + Fields. If you decide to join Rodan + Fields, I believe you will have a hard time even making the “fun money” that they mention.
Being an entrepreneur and starting your own business is a great goal to have, but joining an MLM is not the way for your to have success.
If you were already considering selling skincare products through an MLM company, why not just sell them on your own? You can become an affiliate marketer and sell whatever you want online. By creating your own website, not only will you be your own boss owning your own business, but your won’t have to purchase any inventory, convince others to join your program or rely on others for your success.
The startup costs for building a website are very minimal, and I have found a program that will provide you with training on how to be a marketing affiliate for free. I trust this program, since I once was new at marketing affiliate, and I learned how to create websites from them.
Take a look at the review for Wealthy Affiliate, and if you like what you see, you can join for free and test it out to see if it interests you.
Summary
I hope that from this Rodan + Fields Review you can see that their program is close to a scam and that it is highly unlikely that you will earn much if any money with this program. The best advice I can give you in regard to Rodan + Fields is stay away and you will have more money in your pocket than if you joined.
The costs to most of the kits that you are required to purchase are higher than the amount of money you are likely to make. In order to have samples to share, you are required to purchase the more expensive kits, and I am wondering when you are out of those samples, how much do you have to spend to get more?
I am even more frustrated by the fact that they target moms that I just trying to find a way to contribute when they already have a full time job caring for children and their home. I am one of those moms.
My recommendation is to avoid multi-level marketing companies completely. There is always an upfront cash outlay that is required, and most times you will never earn enough to cover your initial expenses.
Good luck to you in whatever adventure you choose.

MLMs can be a tricky business to be in. It’s hard selling to friends and family that don’t really want to buy your products. It is also a lot of money to invest in something that you are not really sure could work. Affiliate marketing on the other hand is a great money maker! I would love to learn more about your affiliate marketing journey.
I would have to agree with you that most people end up spending more than they make when joining an multi-level marketing business. They also experience a lot of frustration when they are required to get others to join under them. They may think when they originally join that they can find others who would be interested, but that usually isn’t the case.
I am involved in affiliate marketing for the past several years. I found that there was very little start-up cost involved, and yet I could be my own boss, work from home and set my own hours. It works great for me, since I work around my son’s schedule.
When I started, I had no idea what I was doing, but I joined Wealthy Affiliate, and had fun learning how to create a website for myself.
Thank you Marla. Great article. I never heard of Rodan and Fields. Thanks for the great graphics about the company structure. These MLM programs have a slightly different structure but have some similarities.
I appreciate what you said about affiliate marketing. I am more of an affiliate marketer, myself. With affiliate marketing, you get to be more independent. Also, you get to reach the whole internet, which is a broader audience.
Can a MLM person make a website, and sell good through their website? If so then they could do a combo of MLM and affiliate marketing. Wealthy Affiliate would be a good place to make the website, especially because its free to start with 2 free websites.
Thanks for reading and for leaving me a comment on my post.
You bring up a very good point, If someone is still interested in joining a MLM company, they can absolutely sell their products with a website and in fact I recommend that they do create a website. It will allow them to have a much larger audience for selling their products.
Some of the MLM companies I have reviewed, do provide a website for their consultants, but not all of them. I also don’t know what type of support or training that they would receive on creating a website. If they don’t know how to find the best keywords, it will be hard for them to have much success with their website.
They may not decide to be a marketing affiliate, but the training provided from Wealthy Affiliate would still be very beneficial to help them learn how to create a website that has the opportunity to rank in search engines.
I also would have to agree, if the MLM company doesn’t provide them with a website, joining Wealthy Affiliate is a great option, since they would have 2 free websites for their business, have training available and have a keyword research tool available as well.
Thanks for your great insite.
Hey Marla, thank you so much for putting up this sincere review. I have been following your online training for quite some time now and i must confess that they are absolutely phenomenal.
It has really been helpful in positioning me for the online opportunities that are available online. I seem to like this opportunity. . I want you to run me through the process of becoming a Rodan+Field Consultant. As a matter of fact, i will want you to mentor me on this part.
Thank you for following me and for finding value in my articles. I would be happy to help you find what you are looking for, but I have to say that I wouldn’t recommend you becoming a Rodan + Fields consultant. I wouldn’t be able to help you in good conscience, since I feel that this program would end costing you a lot of money, and I don’t feel that you would make very much.
If you would like some direction in learning how to become a marketing affiliate and selling beauty products that route, I would be happy to guide you for getting started. You would still be selling beauty products, but you wouldn’t have such a large investment getting started, and I believe that you could have a better success.
Please let me know if you need additional information.
Marla
Firstly, I’m not Interested in any MLM business because it’ll all end in anger, the promises made that can’t be fulfilled will frustrate you and the most annoying the hard way of making money from MLM. I actually like Rowan and Fields as a business organization with its own pros but the con’s are such to the extent that it is visible. The products are good but the MLM issue is discouraging. I’ve been there before so I can tell a bit. I enjoyed reading through this post and I like the WA recommendation you added to the article, its useful
Thanks for reading, and it sounds like you have had some issues with MLM companies before. I have to agree, that it is almost impossible to make any money through a MLM company. Their pay structures are hard to understand and the requirements for recuiting others to make any money is almost impossible.
