It can be a bit frustrating working for hours searching for the best keyword to get your article ranked within the search engines and writing the best article possible making sure you are solving the problems of your readers only to see once again that your article is no where to be found on the first several pages of the search engines.
What is a person supposed to do to get noticed by the search engines? Well, it is time to stop wondering and start doing what the other top articles are doing to get noticed by Google, Yahoo and Bing. We are going to take a look at how to find ranking keywords like a pro so you can get noticed too.
Older websites had less competition when they were developed, so it was easier for them to rank. Over the years with them sitting in those top choice spots, it has given them plenty of time to get other posts linking to their site as the authority, and this just keeps helping them stay at the top of the rankings.
It is very possible for anyone to knock them out of their position, even if you have a newer website. It is time to start shuffling up the top ranking sites with some newer information.
Use A Less Popular Version Of A Keyword
When you are getting ready to write you next article, make sure you are doing your research ahead of time. Know who you are competing with by searching who else is using the keywords that you plan on using. Go into Google and search how many articles come up with your keyword.
Then try searching your keyword again like this – “keyword”. (With your actual keyword in quotation marks.) Using the quotation marks will only show the articles that are using that exact keyword and not everything that is related to your keyword.
If the competition is still too great, try modifying your keyword to less popular version that still means the same thing. You won’t get as much traffic on a less popular version, but being ranked on page 7 isn’t going to get you any traffic, so I would rather be ranked on page 1 for a phase that might only get 20 visits a month. That is better than none.
If you have a hard time coming up with a less popular version of the same keyword, try using a thesaurus. Most computers will come with a thesaurus, and you will be surprised how many new ideas you can come up with.
Modify Keywords With Additional Descriptions
Add a more descriptive keyword. Here are some examples, but there are so many options you can choose from.
- Top rated
- Must haves for
- Ways to increase
- Complete guide
- Ways to conquer
You can also mix it up within your article. You might start off by talking about “best walking shoes” and later in the article you can refer to the same thing as “top rated walking shoes”. Not only do you get ranked for the keywords from your title, but also from many phrases that are in your article. Changing it up a bit will help rank for other phrases.
Use “How to” Keywords
Many searches on the internet start out with how to do this or that? When you write “how to” articles, not only are you helping your readers solve a problem they have, you can also become a source for someone else to use your article as a link helping their readers.
This will allow you to not only gain traffic from direct searches, but anyone who links to your website from their site, will allow more traffic for your website.
Use Longtail Keywords
Longtail keywords are much more specific phases and tend to get slightly less traffic, but they will be easier to rank for and the conversion on longtail keywords will be much better that shorter keywords. Let me give you an example.
If I was to search how the phrase “dog beds” would do, I would see the follow.
You can see that the amount of traffic per month for this phrase would be great, but my chances of ranking for this phrase would be pretty low, and people searching for this phrase probably are just gathering information. I surely wouldn’t know what information they really want to find out.
Now if I change up the same topic to orthopedic dog beds for large dogs, you will see my traffic would go down greatly, but I would be providing the information that the reader is looking for, and they would be further along in the buying process.
Using longer keywords will give you a better chance of ranking in the search engines and will provide your readers with the information that they are actually looking for, meaning a better chance of them staying and reading the article. The longer they are reading your article, the better chance for a sale and being rewarded from the search engines with higher rankings.
